Susan York Room F103 [email protected] http://mshstem.weebly.com 720-972-7044 Welcome to 6th Grade! Below you will find important information for our class. About Me: I am excited to be joining the staff of STEM Launch this year and to be working with both returning students and students who are new to the building, like me. I have taught in various positions prior to joining the STEM family. I firmly believe that every person is a ‘math person’, even if you do not know it yet. When I’m not at school, I enjoy hiking, biking, and spending time with my family. I have 3 kids of my own, a son who is 16, and two daughters 10 and 8. Course Description: Our sixth grade math and science courses focus on the math fluency, problem solving skills, real life problems, thinking and explaining in writing with proficiency. Students will be introduced to math and science in a variety of ways including workshop model, stations, small group, research, and labs. We will be working on various Problem Based Learning modules throughout the year that align with the standards the students are supposed to learn. Class and homework assignments offer a variety of formats including digital and print media, as well as traditional paper assignments. In class, students are expected to work cooperatively, collaboratively, independently, and as a whole class. This year we will be learning: Math - Numerical Expressions and Factors Fractions and Decimals Algebraic Expressions and Properties Areas of Polygons Ratios and Rates Integers and Coordinate Plane Equations and Inequalities Surface Area and Volume of Prisms Statistical Measures Data Displays Science - Earth Systems: Plate Tectonics Water Cycle Energy: Temperature Transfer Earth and Human Activity: Natural Resources Impact on Living Things Matter and Its Interactions: Atoms - structure and properties States of Matter Waves and Technologies: Light and Digital Wavelengths, frequencies, and amplitudes. Grading:Grades are based on demonstrated student progress toward mastery of common core Mathematics and Science Standards. Each graded assignment contributes to a body of evidence which is used to determine a student's overall ability to meet a given standard. Students will be given rubrics prior to major assignments as well as models of sample projects in class. Rubrics and class handouts will be posted online as often as possible. Students and parents are encouraged to look over rubrics prior to assignment due dates. Students are strongly encouraged to continue to revise work as often as necessary to demonstrate mastery. With this in mind, we will happily continue to accept revised work for a grade until the grading window closes. All revised work should be submitted with the original assignment as well as any rubric or grading sheet attached. The last day we are able to accept work varies by semester, please be sure to check with teacher closer to the end of each term. Homework and late work policy for this course: Homework is given based upon its relevance to the content taught in class at that time. Work not completed during class time should be completed at home. We do understand that life happens and sometimes assignments must be turned in late for a variety of reasons. It is crucial that teachers be notified of any foreseeable delays in completing assignments. Missing work due to excused absences will be addressed on a case-by-case basis according to District Policy. Behavior policy: It is important for students to have a space and a time to focus on their learning, and disruptions in the classroom will affect the learning of everyone in the room. All 6th grade classrooms have the same policy for disruptions. 1st offense 2nd offense 3rd offense Level 1 (minor) Fill out a refocus form/ possible time in another classroom Fill out a refocus that needs to be signed and returned the next day Fill out a refocus, parent signature, and restorative justice consequence Level 2 (moderate) Fill out a refocus to be signed/ possible removal from classroom Level 3 (major) Administrative involvement Contact Info: The best way to contact me is via email at [email protected]. I am unable to speak during teaching hours. I will gladly get back to you as soon as possible. My website is http://mshstem.weebly.com, and I will update it frequently with assignments and resources for the students. Thank you so much and I look forward to a great year!
