April 2016 -
Hello families!!
As we approach the end of the year, I wanted to post some notes about dates coming up for all 6th graders and specifically, our core.
April 22 and April 25 - My class will be taking the End of the Year MAPS assessment. **Ask your student what they got**
April 29 - Field Trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. - For our PBL - "SPACE JUNK" we will be visiting the IMAX theatre and the space portion of the museum.
May 3 - Chapter 9 Test (Big Ideas)
May 13 - NO SCHOOL for students
May 19 - Panel For Our Space Junk PBL
May 23 - Chapter 10 Test (Big Ideas)
May 24-25 - Big Ideas End of Year Assessment
May 26 - LAST DAY for students.
We are almost there! And your kids know it. Please keep the momentum going all the way through as they have not finished 6th grade yet. More refocus forms have been handed out in the last two weeks than a total of all year long. Please make sure that your student knows that we still are in school, and summer is a reward. Some students will be referred to summer school based on their in-class performance. Please keep your eyes open for any sheets that may come home
As always, if you have any questions please call or email!

UPDATE-
We have had to review rules and expectations several times in the last few weeks. It's that time of year.. please make sure to check in with your child on a daily basis about what they accomplished/didn't accomplish that day. Also, homework update - we have begun intervention Wednesdays. Because of this, please make sure that your child has completed at least (minimum) 1 Think Through Math lesson with at least 80% accuracy. This is the 6th grade program and expectations. Obviously, the more the better. Based on your child's intervention skill - they are to work on 3 IXL activities around that skill. This is a total of 4 activities for the week. It runs from Sunday at midnight till 11:59 pm the following Sunday. Homework is important to practice skills and ensure that we are all making progress at our level. You can check each week over the weekend by having your child log in and show you the lessons that were completed. All passwords and logins are listed on this site.
If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We've already been back for 2 weeks of the new year. Time is flyin'... We just completed Rates and Ratios in math, please ask your child what they got on their test, as they have ALL completed it and it IS graded. The received them yesterday. We are now going to be moving into Unit 6, which is Integers. (Positive and Negative Numbers) - This goes along great with our Science Unit of Weather and Climate.
As of January 4, 2016, the kids were all told that there would be a weekly grade for THINK THROUGH MATH .. they must complete 3 Lessons with at least 80% on the accuracy or post-lesson quiz, UNLESS they score that high on the pre-test. I have to put 0's for those who do not do it. You can log into IC.adams12.org to keep up to date with each score that is entered.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!
Conferences are coming up quickly! - On February 10 and 11 (Wednesday and Thursday) - we will be meeting with ALL parents to pass out progress reports. We are requesting that ALL parents attend... the conferences will last anywhere from 3 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the unique needs of your child. On Friday this week, I will be sending home conference forms for a time slot. I will send home YOUR Confirmed Time prior to that week... There is NO SCHOOL FOR KIDS on Feb 10 or 11 or 12 or 15.
See you soon!!!

WOW! This year is FLYING by... I can't believe it's almost time for Winter Break already... Just an update so we are all on the same page :)
1. We are beginning RATES and RATIOS in Chapter 5. All students are responsible for the completion of pages as assigned in class. Some may finish, some may not. I will be doing random checks on work previously assigned in class and grading it. This will not be a "make up" available assignment. Either they will have it or not.
2. We finished up our PBL and they were AMAZING!! We are now beginning a large unit on Weather and Water including cycles.
3. We took our MAP's test for the mid year yesterday. Your child knows their score and whether they met their goal or not. I will be personally contacting parents of students who I need to have a separate conversation with regarding these.
4. PLEASE make sure your child is ON TIME and HERE every day. They miss SOOOO much when they are out. Per district policy, there are only a certain amount of days where a student can be absent before consequences will happen to the PARENTS, not just the child.
5. We have some important dates coming up ... SAVE THE DATE!!!
- Dec 10th - If your child has had perfect attendance, they were invited to a SnowBoarding Event at Breckenridge.
- Dec 14th - Holiday Party at the Westin - a day for out of uniform but NO JEANS, must be dressed up. . .
- Dec 17th - Last day for Students and Last Day for Semester 1.
- January 5th - Students report back to school. Full day!
Any questions... let me know :)

UPDATE! PLEASE READ BELOW!!!
As of Tuesday, October 27, 2015, our class will be focusing on lessons successfully completed rather than time spent. This will ensure that growth is occurring rather than just "going through the motions" of homework. Each student has successfully finished the placement test on Think Through Math and is able to log on. The students will know if they have finished their weekly homework when they have received the 3 badges/stars of completing lessons successfully. I have placed them on the Pathway of 6th Grade Math and each student is placed then based on their answers in the assessment.
Students who do not complete this assignment will be spending lunch detention with me until they complete it AT HOME.
I expect that students are able to maintain homework for 1 hour a week. I'd like more, but realize that things come up. Because we are a technology school, the expectation is that ALL students have access to technology, IE the Internet at home. There are several things you can do if you do not have that available...
1. the library
2. Launch Plus on Tues and Thurs. (Must sign up in advance)
3. Phones/Tablets etc.
Thank you for your continued support and I am looking forward to seeing huge growth headed our way!
STEM Launch Homework Policy:
In order to foster student growth at all levels, all math students in grades 6-8 are required to do a minimum of 60 minutes of IXL (ixl.com) or Think Through Math (http://www.thinkthroughmath.com/) per week. These are computer based math programs that have been proven to increase growth in students who use them regularly. Students will be bringing a letter home in the first weeks of school explaining how they will be expected to use these programs. Students will also be given other homework directly related to classroom learning and PBL’s. For more information, please contact your students teacher.
